CHAPTER 14 ~ SUSPECTS ALL AROUND

From an upstairs window, she watched a somber line of people walking along the path from the gatehouse, like a funeral procession. Four large footmen carried a body, stretched out on a pallet, arms tucked in tight, face uncovered.

They covered the face of the dead.

How had he survived? No worry. He could die before recovering.

They should have left. Every single one of them. So much easier. This whole business should have been clear and simple. Magistrates looked for local causes. Blame the closest at hand.

Except someone else was mucking up the whole game. The tussle was diverting, suspicion always shifting and swaying, everyone squirming. Who could it be? Who would be next? Never seeing what was right under their noses.

Must stay safe, careful. Mustn’t fall into the killer’s net. All was a delicious surprise.

That was where being clever fit in so nicely.

Guilty? “Oh, not me, sir. I have no idea who could do such a thing.” She laughed, smoothed creases from her skirts. Nothing to worry about. With a deep breath she turned, ready to go to the drawing room. Listen to all the silly chatter, everyone filled with woes and fears.

No doubt Lady Eleanor would be distracted and aloof, watching them all. Prim old fool.

She would watch the killer deftly avoid any suspicion.

Before she could reach for the door handle, he slipped into the room. Yes, diversions. She smiled and opened her arms. Nothing like having a tryst with a murderer.
